SERMON SHORT for 22nd, 2019
A hunger for righteousness
Matthew 5:6, Isaiah 58:6-9, Matthew 25:31-40
Jesus’ choice of words here are important. Hunger and thirst – two crucial needs of humans that must be met for our survival. Another word – righteousness- can take on different meanings. It can be about doing everything right to be right with God. It also means doing everything right to be right with each other – justice. We do not have one without the other.
This beatitude challenges us in our very core – are we hungering for justice? If we are sincere in our hunger and thirst we will be satisfied – but only if we hunger and thirst for it like something vitally necessary for our survival.
