SERMON SHORT For January 6th, 2019 – Epiphany
Matthew 2:1-12Ephesians 3:1-12
We turn to a new year. We turn to a new way of looking at our faith – From the bottom up.
For the most part, we have always approached our faith in terms of top down. We start with a big God, (a really, really big God) in charge of everything. This top God is explained to us through prophets, apostles, Bible and ministers. I begin to think Jesus was actually trying to get us to think about our spiritual lives more in terms of from the bottom and going up.
Jesus, Emanuel, is God incarnate in the world, in our neighbor, in the every-day living and events right here on earth. Jesus is God growing like every newborn human. Crying, diapers, temper tantrums, gurgling and cooing, breast feeding. Jesus is God down at the bottom, not at the top. This turns everything on its head.
This Sunday is Epiphany. Kings come to acknowledge a lowly born baby – in a barn – on the bottom.
