Sermon Short for May 6th, 2018 – Rules? Who needs them?

John 15:9-17, Acts 1:12-26

Where did this huge Christian thing come from? How did a rag-tag collection of lawbreakers morph into a religious institution that has encompassed the globe? It is a world incredibly larger than the one the first Christians even imagined existed! Where did it start?

The author of The Acts of the Apostles, Luke, gives some insight into the early Christian church and we’re going to look at its development in our worship services over the next few weeks. I find it curious that the first thing they do, once they’ve gotten over the Good Friday/Easter event is they start making rules to govern the institution.

Where would we be without rules? Christ himself wasn’t big on rules, but somehow the institution that proclaims his gospel can’t seem to go one day without making rules.
