SERMON SHORT FOR MAY 9th, 2021

WIND, SPIRIT, BREATH

Acts 10:1-8, 44–48, John 3:1-10

The Holy Spirit features big in the story from Acts this week. Actually, the Holy Spirit is the main player throughout the whole book of Acts.

I have always been intrigued with the biblical play of the words “Spirit/wind/breath.” In both the Hebrew and Greek, the original language of our scripture, the same word is used for all three. Think about that. When the wind blows, as it often does in Elmira, is it the Breath of God? Is it the Spirit of God? When we need our own breath to live, does it mean we need spirit to live?

The wind blows where it will and we cannot control it.
The stories in Acts remind us the Spirit flows where it will and we do not control it.
