Sermon Short for September 15th, 2019
Be-attitudes
Matthew 5:1–12, Exodus 20
For this season we will explore the Beatitudes, Jesus’ inaugural address. This series of sermons will lead us up to the Christmas season. This Sunday we’ll get a brief overview before delving into the individual blessings over the next weeks.
The beatitudes, or blessings, can be reduced to simple memes – pithy, witty and forgettable – or we can discover that they are meant to turn the world upside down. What does it mean to be blessed? What does it mean to be promised the Kingdom of Heaven? These words are so often reduced to just nice maxims but the truths they contain are radical.
