Sermon Short for January 14th, 2018

Tell me the stories of Jesus – Baptism

Genesis 1:1-5
Mark 1:4-11

At the start of Jesus’ ministry he visited John and he was baptized. This is curious on several levels. But the question that captivates me now is, “Where did this ritual of baptism come from?” “Who invented it?” The more I think of it the more I realize how amazingly clever it is.

It tells me how inseparable our existence is from two things – the Spirit of God (spiritual) and water (physical). The Spirit of God revealed itself countless times throughout the history of God’s people – and many times found in the symbol of water. The Spirit of God brooded over the waters of creation. Water was used to cleanse the world in a flood. The Spirit of God was there. Water protected the people as they passed through the Reed Sea to freedom. The Spirit of God was there. The Spirit of God gave us birth through water, not only we humans but also the created order around us.

While Jesus’ people practiced ritual cleansing since time out-of-mind there was something new and different in the baptism of Christ. The Spirit of God was there in a new and different way. From then on, the Spirit of God was going to show itself in new and different ways.
