Sermon Short for January 28th, 2018 – A Prophet With 10,000 Eyes
Deuteronomy 18:15-20
Mark 1:21-28

The Old Testament and New Testament readings for this week complement each other in their presentation of their prophets for public authority. Starting with the Deuteronomy passage YHWH promises to raise up prophets to proclaim his word in every generation.  But the prophets do not exist in a vacuum. They proclaim to a community and their revelation is tested in the community.

Then comes Jesus. He is affirmed in the community in order to be affirmed as a prophet of God. Jesus is the fulfillment of so many promises made to God’s people throughout the Hebrew Scriptures. But this prophet is different.

Who are the prophets of today? We can’t answer that clearly because we do not have the vision of 10,000 eyes. And how will we know they are prophets of God? God will raise up the prophets to give us direction. Our community will affirm them but their true divine calling can only be tested with time and with the truth of their message.
