Resident Aliens

Genesis 15:1–18, Luke 13:31–35

Ever feel like you don’t belong? Ever feel like you’re in the wrong place, the wrong space, heaven forbid, maybe as a guest at church someday you get the feeling that you have inadvertently sat in the wrong pew; someone else’s pew? Ever feel like you’re using the wrong words or the wrong language even? How about the wrong clothes?

Maybe we don’t belong. Maybe we’re just passing through. Maybe we are just resident aliens. We live here, we hold citizenship here, we vote and shop and educate here but we’re different. Resident aliens stick out somehow; maybe not in obvious ways at first, but in some ways that become distinct and, if we’re doing it right, challenging.

We believe in God. We are set apart as a special people in the world. Resident aliens.
