Sermon Short for November 19th, 2017

WHY JESUS? – WHY KINGDOM?

1st Samuel 8:1-9
Luke 17:20, 21

I can understand the Samuel reading and the people’s desire for a king so they can be “like other nations.” This desire then defines God’s people for generations and centuries. They are ruled by kings, good and bad, just like other nations.

But then comes Christ. He also speaks with kingdom words but he talks about a kingdom of God, not of this world. To be honest, I even have trouble with Christ’s understanding of what we are as children of God.

Our culture no longer thinks in images of kings and queens having authority over us. I believe we are missing the boat by continuing to use these terms in our religious and theological practices. But what do we replace it with? The Parliament of God? The Congress of God?

The best I can suggest is that we are all striving for, and being called toward, the Community of God.

The Community of God is among you.
