SERMON SHORT FOR Thanksgiving, October 8th, 2017
Deuteronomy 8:6-20
Luke 17:11-19
2nd Corinthians 9:6-15
Thanksgiving. We are thankful for the food we eat. For the festive table spread in our houses around which our families will gather, some of them having driven across the province in splendid automobiles. We give thanks to the gracious God that has provided – sort of. Do I need to give thanks for the things I have earned with my own money and my own resourcefulness? Don’t I simply deserve all this?
Not really. Regardless of the efforts and input we have to our providence, we are blessed with a lot of stuff we do not deserve. The Deuteronomy passages tells us we owe God. The Corinthians passage tells us to show respect for that by giving it away. The Luke passage in between tells us to be thankful for it.
As part of our Thankfulness we will decorate the chancel with produce and items brought in by worshipers this Sunday. Bring something to the display. You can take these home afterwards or you can leave them to be donated to the Woolwich Community Services Food Bank.
Be thankful. We’ve got a lot of good stuff. Show that thankfulness.
