Genesis 29:15-28 Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52

One black sheepThe Genesis stories are about the ancestors of our faith. They are stories that show a family as a mess.

Jacob is the most important of this family and the most messed up. He is father of the twelve that become the tribes of Israel. And indeed, the nation gets named after him. He’s really important. And his family is a mess. There is deception, greed, conflict and abuse. And yet, it is this family that gives birth to our western way of life.

What can we take from these disturbing tales of our past?

We are human. God’s children have always been human. And God is – and always has been – moving these ridiculous human messes toward him.
