WHEN THE GOOD BOOK WAS NOT SO GOOD

Exodus 3:7-12, The Revelation 22:14-20

How far will Christians sometimes go to make a point? Even if the point is so opposite to the Good News that Jesus Christ proclaimed?

This Sunday we will be considering a very peculiar version of the Good Book. In the early 19th century the church published a version of the Bible specifically for distribution to slaves. The book was redacted to remove any reference to freedom, liberation and equality. Most of the Old Testament, especially the Exodus, is problematic to people who’s livelihood depends on slave labour so the convenient way to rationalize the injustice was to simply excise it from the scriptures.

The church has a lot to answer for.
