Sermon Short for March 15th, 2020
We are family
John 19:25 –27, Psalm 127
Among the seven last words of Jesus on the cross there are these sayings, “Woman, here is your son” and, “Here is your mother.” It is clear the first phrase is directed at Mary, the mother of Jesus. But the other person to whom the second phrase is directed is not clear. He is enigmatically referred to as “The disciple whom he loved.” A lot of ink has been spent speculating on who that is.
I don’t want to get caught up in that. I want to look at these last phrases of Christ and tease out what they can mean for me personally now. And despite the theology behind who might be the witnesses to these words, there is no denying that they are about family.
Is that the churchy, heavenly family of God, or the earthy physical family around the kitchen table? I confess I don’t know. But I do know the two are pretty closely connected.
In our homes, in our churches, in God’s kingdom; we are family.
