SERMON SHORT FOR AUGUST 9th, 2020

THE TREASURES OF THE SEA

Proverbs 8:22-31, Matthew 4:18-22, Genesis 1:2-23

Day five of the creation story; the waters and the skies are filled with living creatures – creatures with “soul.” And they are told to multiply and “teem.” The seas and the skies, the two realms of the earth that humans cannot naturally dominate. We can’t breath underwater nor fly without our advances in technology.

Yet we have made extensive use, and abuse, of these realms for our benefit.

For the word “living” in this passage, the writer has used a Hebrew word that implies “having soul.” (nephesh). This is a special designation that the plants did not get. And of course, later in the creation humans are created with soul. Would we be more respectful of the seas and skies if understood a common bond of soul with them?
