SERMON SHORT FOR February 21st, 2021
DON’T FALL ASLEEP IN CHURCH
1st Samuel 3:1-21, Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18, John 1:43-51
Be careful if you have become too accustomed to things always being the same in your life, and in your church. Didn’t this past year teach us that much of what we thought was steady and sure can be shaken to its core? It may be that just when we are sure and certain that things are going to be the same and always the same, well, that’s just when they are disturbed.
It happens even in a structure as traditional as church. Samuel and Eli were sleeping in church expecting the same-old-same-old to stay the same-ole-same-old. Physically asleep, obviously, but obviously old Eli had fallen into a spiritual stupor that was damaging the whole community.
Be careful. I think God just loves waking us up with a splash of reality in the face every now and then.
