SERMON SHORT FOR NOVEMBER 15th, 2020

A CELEBRATION OF DISCIPLINE – SERVICE

John 13:1-17, Luke 22:24-27

What are we called to do as followers of Christ? To follow implies that we will do what the leader does. And our leader served. The greatest image of his service was the towel. He was with his closest followers, preparing for a meal. And the leader served by taking on the role of the least among them to ensure that a necessary task was accomplished. He washed his followers’ feet. While the followers argued over who was the greatest among them, their greatest member turned the discussion upside down by stooping down to clean them.

We accept that we will never be the greatest in our community but we try our best to not be the least . The disciples knew that someone needed to wash the others’ feet. But it was a job expected of the least among them. So there they sat, feet caked with dirt. No one wanted to be considered the least. Then Jesus took a towel and a basin and redefined greatness.

This Sunday we will celebrate the sacrament of baptism for Charlotte Bliss, granddaughter of Jan and Graham Parsons.
